Lightweight Backpacking Gear List

Lightweight Backpacking Gear List

Posted by Ryan McSparran on 13th May 2016

On a recent backpacking trip, Kevin and Luke offered their insights on a lightweight backpacking gear list in a quick video. They each approach packing from a different perspective, so we enjoyed seeing each of their styles. Some of the gear performed well while other items may be up for replacement.

Kevin considers himself a lightweight minimalist and his packing style reflects that approach. Luke meanwhile is more of a “just in case” packer and his gear list tends to offer more options from that perspective.

On the recent trip, Kevin and Luke decided to bring Beyond Timberline 2 (BT-2) for their shelter. Weighing just a little over a pound and a half, the BT-2 is a low profile, minimalist tipi style tent that’s comfortable for two people without a wood stove.

For his pack, Kevin opted to carry our Divide 4500 Ultralight Backpack . This pack is lightweight at just 2 lbs 12 oz. Yet it’s spacious enough for several days on the trail or long distance ultralight trips. The roll top design and waterproof materials negate the need for a rain cover, and the mesh stuff pocket and side pockets are perfect for stowing water and accessories.

Luke packed for the trip in our Precipice 5800 backpack. This bag also features a roll top design and waterproof materials but with the addition of a full side zip to easily access gear in the main compartment. The precipice also features large external side pockets for conveniently organizing gear on the trail.
